Tara Seals,Managing Editor, News,Dark Reading July 15, 2026 3 Min Read SOURCE: ERMINGUT VIA GETTY IMAGES As Europe navigates an unprecedented convergence of geopolitical cyber threats, regulatory complexity, and explosive security investment growth, cybersecurity professionals across the EU and UK need intelligence that speaks directly to their reality — not a transatlantic translation. To that end, we're officially launching DR Global’s latest section, DR Global Europe, bringing you threat intel, SecOps deep dives, and strategic insights specifically tailored for cyber pros working in the EU and the UK. Dark Reading is taking the step to single out European coverage because while North America and Europe share a lot of cyber characteristics, including a similar tech stack, a common business language, and a set of cybersecurity defense-in-depth options and philosophies, there are key differences. For instance, Europe faces a consistent onslaught of targeted, attempted attacks against its critical infrastructure from Russia-backed threat groups. While North America faces nation-state threats from China, Russia, and Iran, the proximity and intensity of Russian hybrid warfare operations targeting critical infrastructure is uniquely concentrated in Europe due to the Ukraine conflict. Related:China-Linked Group Targets Southeast Asia Critical Systems Meanwhile, business email compromise (BEC) in parts of Europe is per capita much higher than in the United States, involved in 81% of reported incidents so far this year in Germany and the Benelux region, according to Eye Security. Comparatively, BEC figured in 27% of investigated incidents in the US in 2025, according to Arctic Wolf — a sharp contrast. There are differences in other attack categories, too. Europe claims the dubious honor of claiming DDoS dominance: Europe absorbs 48.4% of global DDoS attacks (five times higher than North America's 9.4%), driven by Russian-aligned hacktivist groups, according to Radware. And while ransomware has been mostly an American scourge for the past few years, gangs are starting to set their sights on the continent now, attracted by the lack of ransomware awareness in the region. Meanwhile, Southern and Eastern Europe emerged as the strongest cybersecurity market growth engines in the second half of 2025, blowing North America out of the water: Spain recorded a 20% increase in cybersecurity spend, Italy grew by 15%, and Poland continued its rapid expansion, up a whopping 59% year-on-year. North America saw around 10% growth in the same time period, and that's all compared with a 12.2% uptick in spending globally, according to IDC. Like our other region-specific sections, for Asia-Pacific, the Middle East & Africa, and Latin America, DR Global Europe is built to be attuned to these nuances, and as a path to providing CISOs and practitioners with tailored analysis, intelligence, and actionable insights that are based on in-region sources and a knowledge of what makes this unique cyber threat landscape tick.
