Network Security Viavi Solutions awarded $1.1 million for 6G security project July 16, 2026 Share By SC Staff SDx Central reports that Viavi Solutions has been awarded $1.1 million in funding from Europe's frontline 6G security endeavor, Shield-6G. This funding, provided through the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) and Horizon Europe, will allow Viavi to contribute its network security expertise to the project. The $9 million Shield-6G project, backed by the European Commission, aims to develop an AI-driven cybersecurity threat intelligence platform for 6G networks. Viavi will lead an AI radio access network (RAN) initiative, utilizing its TeraVM AI RAN Scenario Generator (RSG) and digital twins. This technology will analyze 6G propagation and mitigate signal interference across a wide spectrum, supporting the development and validation of AI-driven security models before commercial 6G deployment. Ian Langley, SVP for Viavi's wireless unit, emphasized the necessity of building security into 6G from the outset. Viavi joins a 20-member European consortium, including Ericsson, Nokia, and Thales, for this project. This initiative aligns with Viavi's prior involvement in EU-funded 6G projects in Germany and Greece, and an ongoing digital twin project in Luxembourg. The broader industry anticipates significant investment in 6G, with projected global wireless capital expenditure to reach $500 billion by 2034.
