Identity , IAM Technologies Google rolls out selfie video sign-in for account recovery July 23, 2026 Share By SC Staff selfie main As outlined in The Register, Google has introduced a new account recovery method that utilizes selfie videos, allowing users to regain access to their accounts by providing a video of their face. This feature is intended as a fallback for when traditional recovery options, such as email or phone verification, fail. Users are prompted to record a short video of themselves, turning their head from side to side, which is designed to deter deepfake technology. Google stated that this method is not a replacement for device-based authentication like passkeys but serves as an alternative for situations where a device is lost. The company emphasized that the selfie video alone may not always be sufficient for account recovery, and additional verification steps might be required based on risk assessment. While the facial scans are encrypted and stored only with user consent, Google also offers an opt-in option for users to allow their video data to be used for improving facial recognition and other verification technologies.
