I've been thinking about what AI should look like for students, because right now it mostly looks like a machine that does their homework for them. I think there's a much better version of it, and I'm calling it Socratic AI. So it's an AI that they're allowed to use after they're done doing their work or after they've already gotten to a pretty decent place by themselves. But the trick is that the AI doesn't really provide answers to them. All it does is ask them questions that help illuminate things so that they can do more work themselves. So they're like, "Hey, what's the answer to this?" and it's like, "Well, what do you think the answer is?" And you're like, "Well, I feel like this character in this book was thinking this, and they were doing that or whatever. I feel like that makes me feel this way or whatever." And things like, "Well, you should write about that. How does it make you feel? That's what your essay should be about." So it's kind of never giving direct answers, but helping them think through their opinions. It's basically like a personal trainer, as opposed to a robot that lifts the weight for them . Make It Real: A Socrates Agent So here is the actual recommendation: make an agent called Socrates and deploy it throughout your family's AI setup to help your kids. The prompt inside it basically says, "Your job is to teach and instruct, but to require the kid to do the work." It's Socratic in the sense that Socrates loved to ask questions that helped people learn, but didn't directly give the answers. We built one as part of LifeOS , and it ships in the next release.
